I recently had my Facebook account suspended because I replied “Drugs” to a friend’s post.
For context, this friend had just finished grad school and was celebrating their first homework-free weekend in years. They asked, “What should I do?”
I replied, “Drugs.”
That was it. That was the joke.
No promotion. No solicitation. No criminal enterprise. Just a dumb, obviously sarcastic reply to an exhausted adult celebrating an obligation-free schedule.
Mind you, this was an old friend. He knew I was joking. Facebook’s robots apparently did not.
Facebook’s moderation system treated it like I was running logistics for a cartel out of the comment section.
But the joke was not really the beginning of the story.
It was the last straw.
For a while now, Facebook’s automated systems have been reaching into old comments, group posts, and memes from as far back as 2015, then judging them against today’s moderation environment.
Some of those posts were not even on my own page. They were replies, group comments, and artifacts of an older internet where humor was often dumber and less carefully sanitized.
Every so often, the system would issue another penalty. Thirty days. Forty-five days. One time it was ninety days.
Each time, I requested a review. Each time, the answer came back the same.
No.
Or more accurately: “No,” as rendered by a system that does not understand irony, absurdity, context, or the strange historical record of being online for too long.
Facebook’s Problem Is Not Just Bad Moderation
Let’s be real. Any platform operating at Meta’s scale will make mistakes. That is unavoidable.
The more serious problem is the process that follows.
In many cases, Facebook does not clearly show you the post, comment, or meme that triggered the violation. It may tell you that you violated a policy, assign the violation some alarming category, and then restrict your account without giving you any practical way to understand what happened.
That matters because some of these category labels sound severe.
At one point, Facebook placed one of my old posts under a category related to child exploitation.
Wait. What?
I still have no idea what comment or meme triggered it. I do know this: I did not knowingly promote or endorse anything remotely resembling that. But the system gave me a category, a penalty, and a review button.
What it did not give me was a meaningful way to dispute the verdict.
That is where the system starts to feel less like moderation and more like punishment without due process.
You are left trying to appeal a decision without seeing the evidence. You are told you broke the rules, but you may not be given enough information to understand what happened, remove the content, or correct the record.
The issue is not whether Facebook should automatically trust the user. It should not.
The issue is whether users can trust Facebook’s enforcement process. When the accusation is vague and the appeal path feels performative, confidence in the platform starts to erode.
Meaningful Review Should Be More Than a Button
To be fair, Meta says its enforcement system uses both automation and human review.
Meta has also publicly acknowledged that its enforcement systems have made too many mistakes, that too much harmless content has been censored, and that too many users have found themselves wrongly locked up in “Facebook jail.”
So I am not claiming to know how every internal review process works at Meta.
I am describing how it appears from the customer side.
From that perspective, the process feels automated, opaque, and practically impossible to challenge. Content is flagged without context. Appeals are denied with little explanation. Human review, if it exists in a meaningful way, is invisible to the person being punished.
That distinction may matter internally to Meta.
It matters much less to the user.
If the human being is unreachable, invisible, and unable to correct obvious context failures, then the system behaves like automation.
And context is exactly where automated systems struggle.
They miss sarcasm. They flatten tone. They do not know when a joke is absurd. They do not know when an old meme belongs to a different cultural moment. They do not know the difference between a dangerous instruction and a stupid punchline.
That might be acceptable if the consequences were minor.
But because Facebook is no longer just a social feed, the penalty does not stay attached to the post.
A Facebook Suspension Does Not Stay on Facebook
Some days Facebook feels like an episode of Black Mirror.
A Facebook account is no longer merely a place where people post vacation photos and argue about politics.
For many people, it is tied to a larger ecosystem.
When a personal account is suspended, it can interfere with groups, events, family connections, pages, business tools, ad accounts, and company assets.
In my case, the suspension did not merely affect my ability to post. It severed access to parts of my professional presence.
That is the part businesses should pay attention to.
Meta has spent years encouraging them to build inside its ecosystem.
Create a page.
Run ads.
Install the pixel.
Use Messenger.
Build community.
Sell on Marketplace.
Manage assets through Business Manager.
Trust the platform.
Then, when something goes wrong, the support experience can feel like shouting into a well and receiving an automatic response from the echo.
That is more than a small customer service issue.
That is a platform dependency issue.
Businesses Do Not Own Their Platform Relationships
In full disclosure, Divining Point hasn’t recommended Facebook advertising since it started conflating “clicks” with engagements with ad copy. And nearly all of our clients expect a direct response that leads to actual website conversions instead of a vanity metric that occurred when someone clicked “See More” on the content.
So the professional fallout from a suspension is negligible at the moment.
Nevertheless, there is an uncomfortable truth for businesses: Meta doesn’t have to be malicious to be risky.
It only has to seem automated, be opaque, and appear unreachable.
When a platform becomes part of your advertising, customer service, reputation, and business identity, its support system becomes part of the product.
If that support system feels mostly like bots, review buttons, and silence, then the product is weaker than the market wants to admit.
Meta seems to want the authority of a governing institution, the efficiency of automation, and the customer service of a vending machine.
That combination does not work.
That does not mean Facebook has no value. It still has scale.
According to Pew Research Center, 71% of U.S. adults say they use Facebook, second only to YouTube at 84%. Pew also found that about half of U.S. adults visit Facebook daily.
But reach is not the same as enthusiasm.
A person may technically “use” Facebook without loving the platform or engaging with it in any meaningful way.
Some people use Facebook because Messenger is still where certain conversations happen.
Some use it because their extended family is there.
Some use it because their neighborhood group still thinks Facebook is the internet.
Some use it because they got a push notification and reflexively opened the app.
That is not loyalty. That is conditioning.
“Daily Use” Can Be Deceptive
The little red notification bubble appears. The user assumes something important happened.
Maybe a friend replied? Maybe someone tagged them? Maybe a family member sent a message? Something requires attention.
Then like Pavlov’s dog, they hastily open the app and discover the “important” notification is actually a post from a page they forgot they followed, a suggested video, or a comment on a thread that stopped mattering three weeks ago.
That is not meaningful engagement. That is the app manufacturing a reason to return.
Facebook has become VERY good at summoning people.
But being summoned is not the same as wanting to show up. The user may still technically be active, but the emotional contract has changed.
They are no longer opening Facebook because they love the experience.
They are opening it because the app trained them to respond.
And when the payoff is consistently disappointing, the habit starts to weaken.
For marketers, this matters because “daily use” does not always mean high-value attention. A platform can have frequent visits and still suffer from weak intent, lower enthusiasm, and less meaningful engagement.
Facebook’s Aging User Problem Makes This More Expensive
Facebook is not irrelevant.
It remains massive among adults and is still one of the most widely used platforms in the United States. But it is also not where younger users appear to be building their online lives with the same intensity.
Pew’s research shows that far fewer young people report daily Facebook use compared with platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. In its 2025 teen social media data, Pew reported that only 20% of U.S. teens use Facebook daily, compared with about 70% for YouTube and 57% for TikTok.
That creates a different kind of risk for Meta.
Facebook can afford to frustrate users when everyone feels like they have to be there.
That was the old bargain. You tolerated the clutter, the bad interface, the strange family arguments, the privacy concerns, the creepy ad targeting, and the increasingly joyless experience because Facebook was still where everyone was.
But that bargain gets weaker when younger users are spending their time elsewhere. Among younger audiences, the center of gravity has shifted toward YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, group chats, and whatever platform will make all of us feel ancient next year.
A platform with strong youth adoption can afford some churn. New users keep flowing in.
A platform with an aging user base has a different problem. It has to retain the users it already has.
That is where Facebook’s moderation and support problem becomes more than annoying. If long-time users can be locked out, mislabeled, or left with no meaningful way to appeal a decision, some of them will stop coming back.
Not all at once. Not dramatically.
They will just care less.
They will post less. They will stop recommending it. They will treat the platform as a utility instead of a community. They will keep a page because they “have to,” not because they want to.
That is a serious brand problem.
And for businesses, it is another reminder that Facebook should not be treated as the foundation of a modern marketing strategy.
It may still matter for organic legitimacy. It may still serve a role in local presence. It may still be useful for retargeting in certain contexts.
But it is harder to recommend as a primary lead generation engine when the platform is difficult to use, harder to trust, and less culturally important to younger consumers.
Meta does not need to collapse for this to matter.
It only needs to become less essential.
The Marketing Lesson Is Simple: Do Not Build Your House on Rented Land
For years, marketers have used the phrase “rented land” to describe social platforms.
It is still the right phrase.
You can build an audience on social media. You can create content, run campaigns, build communities, and drive leads. Some of that work can be valuable.
But you do not own the platform. You do not own the rules. You do not own the algorithm. You do not own the customer support experience. You do not own the appeal process.
You simply have access. For now.
That is why businesses need marketing systems that do not collapse when one platform changes policy, breaks attribution, suspends an account, buries organic reach, kills a campaign, or decides your joke from 2015 is now evidence of dangerous behavior.
Businesses need assets they control.
A strong website.
Clear positioning.
Search visibility.
Email lists.
CRM data.
Customer relationships.
Reviews.
Direct traffic.
Referral systems.
Brand demand.
Content libraries.
Analytics that are not entirely dependent on one platform’s reporting.
Social media can support that system.
It should not BE the system.
What Businesses Should Take From This
The lesson is not “delete Facebook.”
That’s too simplistic for many businesses.
The better lesson is this:
Do not confuse platform access with business security.
Facebook can still play a role in a marketing ecosystem. So can any other platform that is currently convincing investors that a post with a profile avatar will fix society.
But the center of gravity should be something the business owns.
Your website matters more than your Facebook page.
Your CRM matters more than your follower count.
Your email list matters more than your social media organic reach.
Your direct relationships matter more than any single platform’s algorithm.
Because one day, the system may misunderstand you.
It may misunderstand a joke. It may misunderstand a post. It may misunderstand a product. It may misunderstand an ad. It may misunderstand your intent.
And when it does, you will want more than a cold blue review button.
Build Something You Actually Own
My Facebook account suspension may get reversed. It may not. I’m not sure how I feel either way. But the lesson is already clear.
A platform can be useful and still be unreliable.
For businesses, that should be enough reason to rethink the role social platforms play in the larger marketing strategy.
Use rented land when it helps. Just don’t build your house there. Because platforms change. Algorithms misfire. Support queues vanish into the fog.
And sometimes, apparently, a sarcastic one-word joke can make a trillion-dollar company treat you like Pablo Escobar with a comment thread.
That is funny.
